Named in 1802 by Matthew Flinders to commemorate his encounter with Captain Baudin of the French ship 'La Geographe'. Captain R Crozier, anchoring in the lee of Granite Island in 1837, named the adj part of the mainland after his ship 'Victor'. The name was changed to Port Victor in 1865, but because of shipping confusion with Port Victoria on the Yorke Peninsula, the town was renamed Victor Harbor in 1921. Encounter Bay had a tenuous settlement before Adelaide existed, for whaling operations had been started and sealing vessels were sometimes in the area. Whaling was to have become the major industry here, but it faded away after a few years. In recent years the once scarce southern right whales began returning to Encounter Bay in winter to mate and bear their young. Whale watching is now one of Victor Harbor's strongest attractions.
