Pop 4,094. (319km E Melbourne). See map on page 4?9, ref U17. The town is sometimes called 'The Entrance' as it provides access to the Gippsland Lakes and the Southern Ocean. The climate is temperate which makes it a popular tourist resort all year round. Home to one of Australia's largest fishing fleets. Many of the first steamers in the 1860s used the area as a destination to unload supplies, passengers and tourists. Completion of the railway line from Melbourne increased shipping activity, therefore it was not long before boat building became an industry of the area. Originally the lakes entered Bass Strait through an unreliable and natural opening near Lake Bunga. In 1869 construction was started on a permanent entrance and was unexpectedly completed by a violent storm on 14th June, 1889. Wooden pylons were replaced by the concrete and rock visible today. In the 1920s oil drilling commenced and today, crew boats from Lakes Entrance service the drilling rigs in Bass Strait. FESTIVALS: Lions Club Fish Tasting (Easter). ACCESS: Car via the Princes Hwy. Daily rail services from Melbourne to Sale, connecting with bus. Daily coach services available from Melbourne.
