The name Narrogin was derived from the aboriginal word 'Gnargajin', meaning 'place of water'. Narrogin is believed to have derived its name from a small pool which the local Aboriginal people called 'Gnaragajin' meaning 'place of water'. During the 1860s and 1870s shepherds and sandalwood cutters drew water from the pool and, when the railway was built between Beverley and Albany in the 1880s Narrogin became an important stopping point on the line.
