Central to major, natural tourist attractions of the region including The Grampians National Park, Mt Langi Ghiran State Park and numerous wineries. Named after nearby Mt Ararat where the first squatter, H S Wills, rested in 1840 after his long journey from New South Wales. Rich deposits of gold were discovered in the district during 1854 to 1857. The richest of these was the Canton Lead, discovered by the Chinese while en route to the Clunes goldfield in June 1857.
