NRMA has the most trusted and comprehensive accommodation information for your next holiday in Apollo Bay Australia.
Pop 1,777. (187km SW Melbourne). See map on page 9?9, ref H18. Apollo Bay is a popular tourist resort and home port of a large fishing fleet. The town has one of the largest fish freezing plants on the Victorian coast. Other main industries are dairy farming and sawmilling. The town is also a good base for exploring the Otway Ranges. Prior to 1850, the only white visitors to land in the Apollo Bay area appeared to have been whalers. The Henty's had established a small whaling station on Point Bunbury which they used intermittently until about 1847. Timber cutters came to Apollo Bay in 1850. They became the first permanent inhabitants occupying the partly cleared area where the whaling station was sited. The town was first known as Middleton, then changed to Krombruk. The name Apollo Bay was given long before 1850, after Captain Loutitt's schooner 'Apollo' which often used the bay for anchorage when plying between Portland and Geelong in the early 1840s.
FESTIVALS: Apollo Bay Agricultural Show (Jan), Music Festival (Mar).
ACCESS: Car via the Great Ocean Rd. Daily coach services available from Melbourne or rail/coach service via Geelong.
