The name Colac comes from the local Aboriginal tribe called 'Coladjin' (clan of the Wathaurong), it means 'freshwater'. Hugh Murray was the first white settler to Colac in 1837, he set up camp on the banks of Barongarook creek, a pastoralist his main focus was sheep farming.
