Crayfish and abalone fishing are the main industries, as well as dairying, potato and onion growing. During the early 1800s, sealers and whalers operated in Bass Strait, therefore encouraging the growth of new coastal towns. Captain James Wishart explored the Moyne River in the mid 1820s and named the area at the mouth of the river, Port Fairy, after his small cutter 'Fairy'. Whaling ceased in the mid 1840s, subdivision of land followed and many hundreds of families from Sydney, Van Diemans Land and Britain were brought to the new settlement.
