In 1852 it was surveyed and re-named Queenscliff. Due to the town's location, it was recognised as a strategic defence position. The entrance to the Bay was protected by two batteries with three guns each. Fort Queenscliff was established in 1882 as a permanent defence over the entrance to Port Phillip Bay.
