Located on the junction of the Hume and Goulburn Valley Hwys, in a valley at the base of the Tallarook Ranges and on the banks of the Goulburn River. . Known as the 'New Crossing Place' during settlement in 1837, due to travellers passing to Sydney from Melbourne. In 1909, Lord Kitchener recommended that Seymour be used as a military base. This was achieved during WWI. Later the military establishment was located at nearby Puckapunyal.
