Founded in 1853, Echuca is one of Victoria's oldest river towns and is located at the junction of the Murray, Campaspe and Goulburn Rivers. The Murray River is a popular venue for water sports, river cruises and houseboat hire. The port has been restored to provide an authentic and operative 19th century river town. Echuca, founded by Henry Hopwood an ex-convict, boomed as a port and railhead during the riverboat era. In the 1880s it became Victoria's second largest port, second only to the Port of Melbourne. However, as the railways extended to larger towns along the Murray, the river trade diminished. By 1910, very few riverboats remained. In 1969 the National Trust declared the Port an historic area.
