styles. A healthy arts and sporting culture ensures a year-round calendar full of
events. The Sunraysia town was developed by two Canadians, George and William Chaffey, who were persuaded by Victoria's Premier, Alfred Deakin, to establish a township in 1885. The main American influences still remaining are the street numbers, rather than names, and wide tree-lined avenues. Settlers arrived in 1888 and the community prospered until the 1890s. Economic depressions and natural disasters were the major causes of many setbacks. The advent of the railway line to Mildura from Melbourne once again re-established the town. As a result, harvests were able to reach Melbourne markets.
