Pop 2,000. (1676km NE Sydney) The green gem that is Norfolk Island lies roughly halfway between Australia and New Zealand. It was formed by volcanic action, evident in the island's rugged coastlines, cliffs rising steeply out of the sea, patches of sub-tropical rainforest and undulating country. The northern coastline consists mainly of spectacular cliffs while on the south side, the land slopes to pristine beaches and a coral-fringed lagoon. Philip Island and Nepean Island, two smaller, uninhabited islands to the south of the main island, have been declared wildlife sanctuaries. Although Norfolk Island is a territory of Australia, a valid passport is required for entry to the island and re-entry into Australia. Upon arrival in Norfolk, you'll be granted a 30 day visa; quarantine and immigration regulations also apply. FESTIVALS: Country Music Festival (May), Bounty Day (Jun), Agricultural Show (Oct), Hibiscus Festival (Nov).
