The word Lismore is derived from the Gaelic 'lios mor' which means 'Great Garden'. The first inhabitants of the area were the Wiyabal, a tribe of the Bundjalung Aborigines. Cedar getters were recorded here in 1842, and in 1844-45 William Wilson established a station on the Richmond, which he named Lismore. A 'port' grew at the junction of the rivers.
