Macksville began as a private town called Mack's Village after local families McKays and McNallys and parish priest MacGuinnes subdivided their land. The town was a river port for steamers transporting cedar and dairy produce and, until North Coast Railway Line came through in 1919, the river was the most reliable form of transport.
