With the mouth of the Hastings River on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other, Port Macquarie is a thriving coastal resort town. In 1818 John Oxley discovered and named Port Macquarie. Upon his recommendation, a convict penal settlement for 'second offenders' was set up on the site where the town centre stands today. Port Macquarie remained a convict "place of banishment" until 1847 however was opened to free settlers in 1830.
