Pop 18,857. (1828km NW Brisbane, 899km W Townsville) Set on the Leichhardt River, Mount Isa is a major industrial, commercial and administrative centre. Mount Isa has a strong history in mining, fossils and indigenous culture. The current township of Mount Isa was once home to the Kalkadoon aboriginal tribe. During the era of settlers and prospectors to the area fights broke out and there was a substantial amount of blood shed in the area. The Kalkadoon tribe was defeated, however, for the next decade the settlers had hard times in the poor grazing area. In 1923 a lone prospector found one of the world's richest deposits of copper, silver and zinc.
