Pop 428. (122km S Melbourne). See map on page 1?9, ref M18. Small tourist village. Discovered by George Bass in 1798. In 1801 surveys were taken and Lt Grant built a blockhouse and planted seeds at Churchill Island near Newhaven. In 1842 the McHaffie brothers leased the whole of Phillip Island for farm land, but in 1868 the sole occupation was strongly resented and township lots at Newhaven were auctioned. ACCESS: Car via the Bass Hwy, turn off for Phillip Island. Daily coach services available from Melbourne.
