Pop 504. (140km S Melbourne). See map on page 1?9, ref M18. Site of the first settlement in 1801. Discovered by George Bass in 1798, proper surveys of Western Port Bay were undertaken in 1801 but Rhyll was not settled until 1826. The first settlers were convicts and soldiers who cleared about 4 acres of land and set up a small fort. 31 township sites were sold in 1868 at 8 pounds per acre. A tall, local stone monument near the jetty records on, a tablet of Woolamai granite, the early history and discovery of Phillip Island. ACCESS: Car via the Bass Hwy, then turn off for Phillip Island.
