The lake was discovered in 1838 when Joseph Hawdon and Charles Bonney were in the process of pioneering the overlanding of cattle from New South Wales to Adelaide. Barmera took its name from an Aboriginal word meaning 'water place'. Beside the lake a monument explains that in the 1960s Donald Campbell attempted to break the Australian water speed record on Lake Bonney.
