It is the oldest settlement in WA, preserving many of its historical buildings as a reminder of the settlement's early days. In 1791, Captain Vancouver discovered and named Princess Royal harbour. Another visitor was Matthew Flinders who mapped this part of the coast in 1801. Settlement first took place on Christmas Day 1826 when Major Edmund Lockyer with 52 convicts and their escorting soldiers landed from the brig Amity on the shores of Princess Royal Harbour. For many years, Albany remained the principal port in WA. The town was originally named Frederickstown, but the name was changed to Albany at the beginning of 1832 under instructions from Governor Darling in NSW.
