Permanent settlement by Europeans began in the 1850s. Firstly John Wellstead, then Matthew Flinders in 1802, aboard 'Investigator', Edward John Eyre on his epic land journey across the southern coast of Australia in 1841, and the famous WA explorer statesman, John Forrest, who traversed the area in 1870. .
