Weaving its way through forest, dairy farms, and a fruit and wine-growing district, the Blackwood River offers opportunities for fishing, marooning (in season) and canoeing. The town is within easy reach to other south-west towns. Nannup, 'a meeting place by the waters', was first surveyed in 1834 and settled in 1851. It was held to be 'rich agricultural land' with abundant timber for harvesting. It still has a working mill and has proudly retained original timber heritage buildings in the town.
