Perched at the edge of Jamison Valley, Katoomba is the largest settlement in the World Heritage listed Blue Mountains and the administrative centre for the City of the Blue Mountains. It is a popular holiday destination with a wide variety of bushwalks, lookouts, picnic areas, cafes and restaurants. During the 1870s the area was known as 'The Crushers' because of the quarry established there to supply ballast for the railway. In 1878 the name was changed to Katoomba which is derived from the aboriginal word 'Kedumba' meaning 'Shiny falling waters'.
