Nestled in the Tamar River valley, Launceston's diverse living heritage is seen in the Victorian streetscapes and architecture, its galleries, crafts and artwork, and reserves such as Cataract Gorge. Originally called Patersonia after Colonel Paterson, it was later changed to Launceston in honour of Governor King whose birthplace was Launceston in Cornwall.
