Pop 436. (500km W Brisbane, 79km S Roma) Thomas Mitchell founded Surat, situated on the banks of the Balonne River, in 1849. Surat was the site of the last Cobb & Co coach run from Surat to Yuleba in 1924 and boasts much history of the area. Surveyor Burrowes named Surat after his former residence in the Madras Province of India. The mains street bears his name, while other streets bear the names of his family.
